TO AVOID DAMAGE WHEN LEAKAGE OCCURS:
1. TURN OFF GAS - On the gas control located at the bottom of the water heater, twist top dial from the "ON" to the "OFF " position.
For electric water heaters, turn off at circuit breaker.
2. TURN OFF THE WATER SUPPLY - If the valve that turns off the water has a round handle, twist the handle clockwise, (To the right), until it stops turning. If the valve that turns off the water has a flat lever, turn the lever one quarter of a turn so that the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, (Some levers turn left and some turn right). If the water heater continues to leak, you will need to turn off the main water valve ususally located in the front of the house.)
3. DRAIN WATER HEATER IF NECESSARY TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE - If the water heater continues to leak and cause damage. attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the bottome of the water heater. Run the other end of the hose to a lower elevation location where the hot and/or rusty water will not cause damage to plants or property. After opening the drain valve, you will also need to either open the hot side of a faucet or pull up the lever on the pressure and temperature releif valve to allow air to enter the water heater.
